Scottish silver spice lifter, c1790

£85.00

Antique Georgian Scottish silver spice lifter with crested finial.

The spice lifter bears the hallmarks for Scottish silver (thistle), duty paid (George III head), and the maker's mark of William and Patrick Cunningham.
William and Patrick Cunningham are known to have worked towards the ends of the 18th century so, though there is no date mark, we believe this lifter dates to c1790.
Also to note is there is no town mark, but it is believed William and Patrick used both Edinburgh and Glasgow assay offices.

The ladle shaped spice lifter is 11 cm (4.4") long. The pierced bowl is 2.8 cm (1.1") in diameter and .8 cm (.3") deep. It weighs 10 grams.
All measurements are approximate.
Overall the spice lifter is in good condition for its age. There is light overall scratching and the bowl and finial are slightly misshapen. Of most significance are the scratches to the front face of the finial which encroach on the crest.
Please study all photos as these form an important part of the description.
