Julie Lightburn: Hay Mews of Swaledale

£575.00
"Hay Mews of Swaledale, North Yorkshire Dales". This is an original pastel painting by York artist Julie Lightburn. You can read more about Julie by following the links on the "Special notes" tab below. Many meadows in Swaledale have a stone barn, used to store the hay produced in the surrounding meadow. Each barn has an area for hay, called a hay mew, and a separate area for wintering cows in stalls. During the winter the farmer would walk to his barns twice a day to feed his cows and to let them out to drink. Today a few barns are still used to store hay; hardly any are still used to house stock. The picture is framed in a glazed frame. The framed picture measures 62 cm (24.4") by 52 cm (20.5") … the actual visible picture is 44 cm (17.3") by 33.5 cm (13.25"). All measurements are approximate.
