Anthony Bartyla

Initially drawn to masonry through his love of history and art, and particularly inspired by York Minster, Anthony has been working and carving stone for eight years.

Anthony started his training through a two-day a week NVQ level 2 masonry course at York College, which is a centre of excellence for stone masonry.

Mid way through his second year he was able to find a job working for the Fitzwilliam Estate and the Earth, Stone and Lime Company in Malton, North Yorkshire. Here he met his employer and one of his future mentors, Nigel Copsey. Earth, Stone and Lime Company specialise in returning the old decrepit buildings to their former glory using traditional methods.

Anthony was subsequently inspired to take up sculpting and stone carving as a hobby and enrolled in evening classes at York College to help develop his skills. Through these evening classes Anthony met and forged friendships with stone carvers who worked on York Minster. These stone carvers recognised his passion for carving and took him under their wings, and have helped him develop his skills. Recently Anthony has been working with the special effects company Paragon Creative Ltd, learning the trade of professional sculpting and moulding.

Anthony is very passionate about the material and the craft of Masonry. In the future he hopes to apply for the Historic Carving course at the City and Guilds in London, learning to care for and restore some of the greatest sculptures in the world. Eventually Anthony would love to teach his craft to the next generation and maybe even join the master carvers association.

Anthony set up his own business in 2012, creating bespoke carvings for clients who wanted to enhance the beauty of their home or garden, using traditional methods and locally sourced lime stone.
