Paul Blackwell

Paul was born in 1951, and after school went to Solihull College of Art. From there he went on to do a B.A. in Fine Art at Bath Academy of Art. It was there he met his wife Anne (Thornhill), who is also an artist.

Paul and Anne moved to Whitby where they opened Linskill Gallery and soon after another in much larger premises, The Grosmont Gallery.  After nearly 20 years they sold the gallery and moved into an 18th century farmhouse overlooking the Esk Valley near Whitby, and it’s here they have a barn studio.

Paul was also head of Art at Fylinghall School, Robin Hoods Bay for many years.

Paul works in many different media, including Oil, Acrylic, Pastel and Pastel Pencil. He is passionate about wildlife and the natural landscape and a lot of his work is done from the 14 acres they have as a small nature reserve.

Paul has been influenced by many artists, the main ones being Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Sisley, Monet, Degas, Derain and Matisse. He likes his work to have a sense of the place and of the passion felt. Colour is important to him as it helps convey the feelings first encountered.

Paul’s work has been sold to collectors all over the world.
