Louis Icart

Louis Icart (1880-1950).

Louis was born in Toulouse, France.

He began drawing at an early age and was particularly interested in fashion.

Louis worked for several fashion design studios, at a time when fashion was undergoing a radical change from fussy 19th century apparel to the simple clingy lines of the early 20th century.

In 1907 Louis moved to Paris, and there started to concentrate on painting, drawing and the production of etchings.  It is these that have for the most part ensured his name in art history.

In the 1920s Art Deco arrived, and Louis, who was working for publication and major fashion and design studios, became very successful, artistically and financially.

Earlier, in 1914, Louis had met an effervescent eighteen year old blond called Fanny Volmers, an employee of the fashion house Paquin. They married and she became a source of artistic inspiration for the rest of his life.
