Judy Burnett

York artist Judy Burnett is best known for her land and seascapes of North Yorkshire and the Mediterranean which she presents in illustrative 2D and 3D collages.

Judy studied illustration at Hull College and Hornsey College in London. She lectured in art and design at York and Hull Colleges for over 30 years whilst simultaneously pursuing a career as an illustrator and exhibiting artist. She has maintained her interest in education through part-time lecturing and running workshops.

Judy’s working method is to make preliminary drawings in small sketchbook diaries.

Back in the studio, Judy develops these in a range of media. She makes printed textured papers and uses collage, torn and scissor-cut, to draw the composition together. She uses monoprint for the figurative elements of the work.

The aim is to keep all the mark-making fresh and spontaneous and to echo the power of the elements at the time of observation.

Judy’s solo exhibitions have included the Turkish Embassy London, Amnesty International York and London, Langwith College University of York, the Oriental Museum Durham University, the Pyramid Gallery and Ken Spelman’s Bookshop in York, the Morten Gallery Bridlington and Walter C Young Center, Florida, United States.
